Upload Your DNA Raw Data: A Plain-English Second Look (Without Another Spit Kit)

What is DNA raw data, exactly?

When a consumer DNA service processed your saliva sample, it measured hundreds of thousands of specific spots in your genome, called markers. Your raw data file is simply the list of what was found at each spot. It's usually a plain text file, one marker per line: an ID (like rs4988235), its chromosome and position, and the two letters you carry there.

The report you saw in your original app was one company's reading of that file. The file itself is yours to download and take elsewhere.

Why get a second look at data you already have?

Lots of people open their original results once, scroll through ancestry percentages, and never go back. A second look is useful when you want:

• Plain language. A readable story instead of a wall of percentages and marker IDs.
• Different topics. Everyday traits like nutrition, fitness, and sleep, explained in one place.
• No second kit. You don't spit in another tube, wait for shipping, or pay for lab processing again. Your DNA hasn't changed, so the file you already have still works.

It's the same data, read again with a different focus.

Which DNA services' files can you upload?

My Gene Story accepts raw data from the major consumer DNA services:

How to download and upload your raw data

The process is the same idea everywhere:

1. Sign in to the service you tested with and open your account or DNA settings.
2. Request a raw data download. Most services confirm your identity first (password, emailed code, or date of birth) and then email you a link when the file is ready. That can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks, depending on the provider.
3. Download and unzip the file on a personal computer, not a shared one.
4. Upload it at mygenestory.com/upload. Your browser checks the file format first, so mix-ups get caught early. Add your email and submit your request. You'll see a receipt number for that request. After you buy, your order email includes a private link to upload your file. The link works for 30 days.

How to read what your DNA Story tells you

The most useful mindset: read genetic likelihood like a weather forecast. A 70% chance of rain doesn't mean it will rain, and a genetic tendency toward, say, preferring endurance exercise doesn't mean you can't love sprinting.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Genes are one input. Sleep, food, activity, stress, and environment shape how traits show up.
• Consumer files are a sample. They read hundreds of thousands of common markers, not every letter of your genome, so results describe tendencies, not certainties.
• Use it to get curious. The best use of a trait insight is a small, safe experiment, like trying a different training style or tracking how a food choice feels, rather than a verdict about who you are.

Is uploading your DNA raw data safe?

Any personal data carries some risk, so be deliberate:

• Download your file on a personal device and delete stray copies you don't need. Once downloaded, that copy isn't covered by your original provider's security.
• Read the privacy terms of any service you upload to.
• At My Gene Story, we never sell your DNA data. We keep your DNA file so you can unlock more reports without uploading again. Email ask@mygenestory.com anytime and we'll delete it within 30 days of your request. We check your file's format in your browser first. After you purchase, your order email includes a private link to upload your file. That link stops working 30 days after the email. Our privacy policy has the details.

What a second look can't do

Being clear about limits is part of reading DNA well. A DNA Story from consumer raw data is for personal education and wellness curiosity. It isn't medical advice, and it isn't a substitute for talking with a qualified healthcare professional about a health concern. If something in any DNA report worries you, take that question to a professional rather than to an app.
