Get your AncestryDNA file
These steps match our AncestryDNA upload guide. Ancestry's own help is the source for the email timing below.
- Sign in at ancestry.com. Open Account Settings, then the DNA tab, and select the test.
- Choose Download DNA data, confirm, and verify with your password or an emailed code.
- Ancestry's email can take up to 24 hours. The link works once and expires after a week. Only the latest email's link is valid.
- Download the zip and unzip it. The file to use is AncestryDNA.txt.
Check the file free
The free file check runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. It shows whether the file opens, that it came from AncestryDNA, the SNP count, and how many of 29 common trait markers it reads (taste, lactose, caffeine, sleep timing, and muscle fiber). It does not say what the markers mean.
A .txt or a .zip of that file can be checked. You send the file to us only after you buy, from the private link in the order email.

Limits
A DNA Story covers wellness traits. It does not include disease-risk reports. Which markers a file contains depends on the chip and the download, so two AncestryDNA files need not cover the same spots.
A likelihood is not a certainty. Sleep, food, activity, and the world around you all play a part. A medical question belongs with a clinician or a genetic counselor.

No. A DNA Story is a written reading of everyday traits such as nutrition, fitness, and sleep. Ancestry Insights is a separate $19.99 add-on for heritage context. It is not a replacement for the ethnicity estimate in your Ancestry account.
How long does the Ancestry download take?
Our AncestryDNA upload guide, following Ancestry's help, says the email can take up to 24 hours. The link works once and expires after a week. If you requested more than once, only the latest email's link is valid.
Is the file uploaded during the free check?
No. The free check runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. You send the file only after you buy, from the private link in the order email.
