How to download your raw data from MyHeritage
My Gene Story accepts a MyHeritage raw DNA file. If your MyHeritage DNA results are already published, that file is the copy you need. You do not buy another kit. Downloading it leaves your MyHeritage results in place. Your DNA does not change, so a file from an older test can still be read.
These steps follow MyHeritage's help page, How do I download my raw DNA data file from MyHeritage?, checked on 14 Oct 2026. Menu names can move. If a button is gone, search MyHeritage help for "download my raw DNA data file."
Before you start
MyHeritage lists a few limits on that page:
- The Download action appears only after your DNA results are published.
- Only the manager of the DNA kit can download the file. The person the kit is assigned to cannot.
- Use a computer or an Android device. MyHeritage says the download does not work on an iPhone or an iPad.
- A kit that was uploaded to MyHeritage from another company cannot be downloaded from MyHeritage. Get that file from the company that ran the test.
You will also want the email address on the MyHeritage account, and a personal computer rather than a shared one.
Request the file
- Sign in at myheritage.com.
- Hover over the DNA tab and open Manage DNA kits.
- On the right-hand side of your MyHeritage kit, click the three dots and choose Download.
- Read the window that explains the download, then click Continue.
- Accept the MyHeritage Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click Continue.
- MyHeritage emails your registered address. Open that email and click the download link. The link is valid for 24 hours. If it expires, repeat these steps for a new link.
- MyHeritage sends you back to the site. Enter your password and click Download. The file saves to your computer.
What the MyHeritage file looks like
MyHeritage describes the file on How should I interpret my raw DNA data?. It is a tab-delimited text file. A header describes the data. After that, each line is one marker, in five columns:
- an rsID, when the marker has one
- a chromosome
- a position on that chromosome
- allele 1
- allele 2
You do not have to read it. It is text. Letters such as A, C, G, and T stand for the two values at that spot. MyHeritage says it reports those values on the forward strand of the reference genome.
My Gene Story lists the MyHeritage file as a .csv. At mygenestory.com/upload, your browser checks the format first. A MyHeritage file is recognized when a header line starts with ##fileformat=MyHeritage, and the page labels it MyHeritage. A .txt or .tsv with that same header also passes the check. Zipped or unzipped files are accepted.
Opened the file in a spreadsheet and saved it? Download a fresh copy. A spreadsheet can change the format when it saves.
What you can do with a MyHeritage file
The file is a list of markers from the test you already took. A second look can turn some of those markers into everyday language about traits such as nutrition and fitness. Read a genetic likelihood like a weather forecast: a tendency, not a certainty. Sleep, food, activity, and the world around you all play a part. The reading is educational. It is not medical advice.
My Gene Story accepts this file. The DNA Story is a full written report. The price is $24.99 one-time, no subscription. That is a one-time fee for the written report. Your DNA Story is delivered within 3 working days after we receive your file.

MyHeritage no longer accepts uploads from other companies
In May 2025, MyHeritage stopped accepting raw DNA uploads from other companies. Older articles still recommend uploading a 23andMe or AncestryDNA file to MyHeritage. That path is closed.
MyHeritage's October 2025 post says that, as of mid-May 2025, DNA uploads are no longer supported. Read the post.
Downloading your own MyHeritage file is a different step. If you tested with MyHeritage, you can still download that file and bring it here.
Where a MyHeritage file can go
People compare a few services when they already have a raw file. The first three rows use those services' published prices and file rules. The My Gene Story row uses our price and our delivery time. The fee is for a full written report.
