Can I get a health report from my 23andMe raw data?

What's in your 23andMe raw data file
The download is a zipped text file, and its name begins with the word genome. 23andMe says the text file is lines of genotype calls, the letters A, T, C, and G. That is on the US help article and the EU help article. Checked 16 Oct 2026.
The EU technical details article says an rsID is the label used for most SNPs, and that in the downloaded file the entry for any uncalled SNP displays '--' instead of a two-letter genotype. The same article also says an insertion or deletion may be reported as '--'. The file lists your genotype at hundreds of thousands of markers. A header row named rsid, chromosome, position, and genotype is not stated on the accessing articles.
Only a subset of markers has been individually validated. 23andMe says the raw data has had a general quality review, and that the Browse Raw Data feature is suitable only for informational use and not for medical, diagnostic, or other use. How to download it from 23andMe
- Sign in and open the raw data page. Both help articles list you.23andme.com/tools/data/, the profile menu (Resources, then Browse Raw Genotyping Data, then Download), and Account Settings, then View under 23andMe Data. US help. EU help.
- Confirm the date of birth for that profile, read the notes, tick the box, and submit the request.
- When the email arrives, download the .zip. The US article says this usually takes about one week and can take up to thirty days. The EU article says the notification email comes within 48 hours. Use the article for your account. Every click is also in how to download your 23andMe raw data.

What happens to your file
Raw DNA file: deleted 30 days after we deliver your DNA Story, including copies in email attachments we received. If you ask, we delete it sooner. Your DNA Story report is kept for 2 years so you can download it again, unless you ask us to delete it earlier.
We do not sell your genetic data or personal data. We never sell or share genetic data. Ad pixels and hashed-email matching with Google and Meta may count as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising. That is not your DNA file.

Is 23andMe raw data accurate enough?
23andMe says only a subset of markers has been individually validated, and that raw data is for informational use, not medical or diagnostic use. We read only clear genotype calls. A no-call is not treated as a result. If we cannot read the file you send, we refund you in full. A DNA Story is an educational note on everyday traits. It does not grade the laboratory, and it is not a diagnosis.
Can it tell me my disease risk?
No. A DNA Story does not report disease risk, carrier status, or medication decisions. It is a plain-English reading of everyday traits such as nutrition, caffeine, sleep, and fitness. 23andMe says the raw data is for informational use and not for medical or diagnostic use. If the question is a medical one, talk with a clinician or a genetic counselor. The report will not answer it.
Do I need a new kit?
No. The DNA Story uses the 23andMe raw file you already have. You do not buy another kit, and you do not send a new sample. Your DNA does not change, so an older download can still be the file you check. If you no longer have the original .zip, request it again from your 23andMe account. Is the free check really free and private?
